Playstation Controller via USB adapter question
« on: September 27, 2017, 12:17:11 PM »
Hi,

Curious about something. I'm using an official Playstation 2 Controller connected via a PS2 to USB adapter. Windows recognizes the controller and it doesn't require any special drivers. I don't use the dualshock functionality. I configured controller buttons in retrofe config file as normal.

For all my other emulators/games etc the gamepad works perfect. The direction and other buttons work fine.

When I run RetroFE, I have to press the 'Analog' button (the middle button that lights up in red) to get the direction buttons working. When I choose a game, once I am in it, I have to press the Analog button OFF so that my emulator responds to my controller configuration.

Other games, emulators etc do not require me to do this.

I've attached my controls.conf file incase I have set up my controller incorrectly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which version of RetroFE are you using? Have you tried this setup with other versions as well? There was a recent change in the controller handler, so perhaps that may be of influence.

I'm using 0.80 I think.

I'll try the setup with other versions and feedback.

I do believe the controller handler may need looking at.

the controls.conf file allows offers 2 types of codes for configuring the dpad (direction pad) on the gamepad

joyxhatyleft

joyxaxis0+

Using the MAME input configuration screen I tried different combinations to see what values are returned. I did some tests with setting the button for UP.

Button                       Value returned

dpad up                               Joy 1 Up
dpad up (analog on)             Joy 1 Hat Switch U
POV stick 1 up (analog on)    Joy 1 Up

I have no interest in having analog switched on as I have no interest in using the POV sticks. I want to use the direction buttons to control the retrofe menus without having to switch the analog button on.

You're using RetroFE 0.8.13 at the moment?

Sorry dude. I was using version 0.8.0. I've checked the controls.conf file for version 0.8.13. What should I put down for 'up' i.e. what button press from the gamepad?

There's no guidance in the file. I don't know what keyword to use.. i.e. joy1up joy1axis+ etc

I've heard similar issues from others. 0.8.13 works a lot better with newer types of controllers, but not too well with older types. I'll spend some more time on that soon. Unfortunately I have a limited set of controllers to test the code with at the moment. I do believe we should have a configuration tool added asap though, to stop people from using trial and error to sort out the controls.

config tool from within the frontend sounds good.
