Disclaimer: I haven't messed with RetroFE in a while.

I recently tried to create a collection using a .sub file from the parent collection which uses an include, txt. The problem is it ignores the contents of the sub file and just displays the entire include of the parent directory.

If there is something I'm doing wrong please inform me on how to fix it. Otherwise, this feature is broken.

Help / Re: A way to show previous and next playlist?
« on: March 14, 2021, 11:11:32 PM »
This is one of the few features the frontend lacks for me and something I've requested in the past.

A menu for playlists is much better in terms of presentation and ease of use. Tapping the next/prev keys is pretty clumsy if you have more than a few playlists.

http://retrofe.nl/SMF/index.php?topic=7.msg4300#msg4300 is 10.7 and since it's open source anyone can compile it at any time.

You specify the emulator executable path in the launcher file so that can be anywhere. Likewise, you can specify the location of roms and any media in the settings.conf file for each collection so they can be anywhere as well.

General Discussion & Help / Re: New standard theme?
« on: August 23, 2020, 06:38:48 PM »
So a standard theme should encompass every system ever made? So this theme would need media for every system then, right?

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant. I was saying a default theme should be one that doesn't require a bunch of special artwork for each platform, just the standard logos and box art that can be found everywhere.

Not like a lot of those "packs" and themes that random groups put out where you can't just setup a platform and have it look like the others.

So, start it off. First you need a core system group.

Strongly disagree. A default theme should work regardless of which platforms you have in your setup.

You can create playlists using any criteria you want, but you have to do it manually. I wrote a tool a while back to automate it for my own use but I don't think there's a tool like that here. I could be wrong though since I never really looked for one.

I don't see any reason to change the default theme, personally. From what I've seen there haven't really been any new themes posted here anyway.

If you were to change it for whatever reason, stick with a "global" theme that doesn't rely on per system artwork. I agree with Signum regarding not changing it to any coinops theme.

General Discussion & Help / Re: Playlist Menu?

Can RetroFE be controlled via command switches? If not is that something that could be added in the future? This and the previous would allow many third party features to be added to RetroFE.

The only switch I'm aware of is for creating a collection. I'm curious, what exactly would you want to have control over from CLI?

Other than launching directly into a collection/playlist or overriding the layout specified in the conf file I'm not really sure what you could have in mind. Even those 2 things would be pretty niche in terms of usage I think.

I don't want 2 menus to scroll through. It doesn't look good IMO and the playlists aren't easy to identify. Not sure how well that would work with more than a few playlists either.

Ideally I'd just like to see where you press a hotkey and the playlist dir is loaded as a normal collection and the playlists could have the normal media assets applied to them. To me that's a lot simpler, cleaner, and usable.

If it's not something that's going to be implemented any time soon I may just look into implementing it myself at some point.

I might be wrong since I haven't been following development lately, but unless something has changed recently it's not possible.

A playlist menu is one of the few things RetroFE is missing for me personally. I think I may have brought this up as a request a while ago but I don't think it went anywhere. IMO, playlists are just too clunky to navigate without a menu to the point where they're not worth using, sadly.

Remove the reflection attributes from the ItemDefaults on the collection box front menu.

Do you already have RL setup and want to know how to set RFE to use it or are you asking how to setup RL from scratch AND set it up with RFE?

What, then, is the distinction between include.txt and menu.txt?  Also, does exclude.txt support wildcards?  Could I, for example, exclude any game in my directory that matches *(Beta)*?

include/exclude.txt are for items in a collection. menu.txt is for submenus. None of them support wildcards, what you enter there is used verbatim.
