General Discussion & Help / Re: A Couple Of Issues
« on: January 18, 2017, 10:20:08 PM »
Regarding the video issues: I notice my CPU has so little to do that it drops down to 800 MHz, which may cause the video playback issues... I haven't been able to stop it from doing that yet. 😢

Off Topic / Introductions are in order: who are you?
« on: January 18, 2017, 02:07:11 PM »
I figured it was time one of these threads was started. :) Who are YOU?

I'll kick off:

My name is Pieter Hulshoff, born on the 7th of October, 1972, and living with wife and 2 children in the Netherlands. I hold a masters degree in computer science, and have been working as an ASIC/FPGA design engineer (till 2013) and (since then) as a network consultant & systems architect in the Telecom industry. My hobbies include Kuk Sool Won (martial arts), reading, D&D, and playing with my huge organ.

I started playing with Linux and MAME in the mid-late 90s, and after programming some minor features for xmame I figured I could write my own front-end (just in case you were wondering where that MAMEd theme came from). I lost interest for a while, and when I wanted to restart with my front-end in 2013, I found out there were already plenty of alternatives. Few of those however were F/OSS, so after a bit of investigation I started helping out with RetroFE rather than do everything on my own again, and now here we are. :)

Off Topic / Re: What do you play atm?
« on: January 18, 2017, 01:53:49 PM »
I still have a ton of games I need to finish. I'm hopelessly stuck in numerous Metal Gear games, try to motivate myself into completing Castlevania Lords of Shadow, and generally just try to recapture old skills in several shoot-em-ups like Gradius, Parodius, and Stardust HD. I regularly coin my way through beat-em-ups and Metal Slugs, but mostly I just play my way through old MSX games.

Has this issue disappeared since I removed all the WordPress plugins or does it still exist?

Also: Any web developers willing to give me a hand on improving this website? :) Web design really isn't my strong suit. Neither is programming, but I manage to bluff my way through that. ;)

I can safely say that this hobby generally takes up a lot of time, no matter which front-end you choose. :) Aside from programming, a lot of my time has gone into getting art sets and matching game sets complete with a decent quality. That part should be getting easier in the not too distant future though, with people working on providing complete sets to the community. I'm still curious to find out why the controls.conf file from the old forums didn't work for you, since IMHO it should have.

Feature Requests / Suggestions / Re: Per game launcher configuration
« on: January 17, 2017, 09:58:54 AM »
I'm considering adding the following feature:
Add an optional launchers directory to each collection, in which a .conf file can be created for each game. When launching, RetroFE will check for the launcher file, and if it exists it will use that launcher. If it does not exist it will use the default launcher set for that collection.

It's on my todo list. For now you could put it in a separate collection, and then include it via a .sub file.

Feature Requests / Suggestions / Re: Scan for roms recursively
« on: January 17, 2017, 06:28:04 AM »
Grab the latest executable from the features thread; 0.7.20b3 supports that feature. Just set list.romHierarchy to true in the settings.conf of that collection.

I'll give it a test run, and let you know. 😀 If it's ready for release I can add it to the download section if you'd like.

It's not a difficult fix; I'll try to free up some time to do it soon.

Can you upload the log.txt without the quotes in the launcher?

I may give that a try as soon as I can find some spare time. :) I have a PS3 controller that I could use for that purpose. I'm just surprised that the config file from the old forums didn't work, hence my questions towards the OP. I also think that joy2key should have worked, so I'm a bit at a loss here.

Implementing a gui however is a bit more work than I have time for at the moment, though if anyone wants to have a shot at it: feel free. RetroFE is F/OSS after all. :) I'll happily test and integrate it.

Did you try using joy2key as was suggested? I presume Windows properly detects your controller, and it can be used in other programs?

I agree that a setup gui would be nice to have, but unfortunately other things have priority at the moment. Still, a working xbox-360 controls.conf should be easier to provide. Unfortunately I don't have one, so I cannot test it either.
