General Discussion & Help / Strange SDL/CPU behaviour
« on: January 21, 2017, 07:41:48 AM »
I figured I'd post the question here; perhaps any of you have an answer. I've noticed some strange behaviour with SDL vs my CPU. This behaviour is manifested in RetroFE as well as when I run MAME with a simple game like Pacman without throttling (so maximum speed). For some strange reason, the intel powersave kicks in, and the CPU is scaled down to 800 MHz. This doesn't happen when I run Pacman at 100% speed or when I run a demanding game like Radiant Silvergun. I've tried everything I could find online, but no luck so far. Considering the behaviour with Radiant Silvergun, I doubt it's a heat problem. The CPU has no trouble running at 2400-2500 MHz for long times during that game.

I think this downscaling is causing video decoding problems for me as well; my CPU can't keep up on rare occasions. When I reduce the FPS for RetroFE from a maximum of 60 to 30 or even 24, this problem disappears, and my CPU is happily running at 2000-2500 MHz. Any thoughts?

Feature Requests / Suggestions / Re: Per game launcher configuration
« on: January 21, 2017, 07:35:24 AM »
The way it's implemented now is that I simply allow a new launcher to be selected via a .conf file in the launchers directory of the collection. All the real launchers are still in the launchers directory as always.
As a simple example: I could add a SNES rom "Super Turrican.zip" to my NES set, and add a launcher file "collections/NES/launchers/Super Turrican.conf" containing the line SNES. For that game it will then use "launchers/SNES.conf" in stead of the default "launchers/NES.conf". This will keep all launcher files in the same directory, while allowing you to select a different launcher for specific games. I'm not 100% sure if this is the best solution; in stead I could also use a full launcher file in stead of a launcher change. What are your thoughts?

I've got it working in bit bucket; just want to do some more testing.

Feature Requests / Suggestions / Re: Scan for roms recursively

It's certainly possible to do so, but if the number of files increases it will seriously slow down the performance. Loading the roms is a one time thing when entering a collection, but loading of art is a rather continuous occasion.

Please send me the log.txt of when that happens?

Just got word tonight that someone's already on it. I currently have 3 potential helpers on the coding front.

Great news! Looking forward to it. I've also checked in some changes, so this should make a nice set for 0.7.20b4. I'm working towards a 0.7.20 full release again soon.

Please do. Provided it's stable, I'm very open to using a new video library.

You're so much better at this than I am. 😀

You're also making it usable for mobile then? I'm not married to WordPress, but in the end I should be able to maintain it without your help as well. 😀

The reason I asked about the menu structure is this:
If all your menus are 3 tier menus, you could solve it in one layout.xml.
If some are 2 tier menus, and some are 3 tier menus, and your level 2 and level 3 should look the same, you could solve it in one layout.xml.
If some are 2 tier menus, and some are 3 tier menus, and your level 2 and level 3 should look different for the 3 tier menu, you need to solve it via the layouts/ChickenCoop/collections/<collection name>/layout directory.

Basically, RetroFE does not check if your collection is a game collection or simply an intermediate menu. I could change that, but we currently also support mixed collections (e.g. my Main collection contains collections, Shutdown, and Kodi), and that would pose a problem then. As such, all layer 2 collections look the same, all layer 3 collections look the same, etc. If you want that differently, you need to go through the option of a layout for a specific collection.

I'll see how difficult it would be to change collections without going up a level. I'm not promising anything though. :)

I think it's an improvement over what I have for sure, though I miss the download menu button, and I would like a slide-show/video on the front page as well. You're making this with WordPress I hope?

We should also make a promotion video again sometime; one that really shows off RetroFE, and that we can show on the front-page. Is anyone up for making one? TimmyB made one in the past, but I haven't spoken to him in a while.

I have no opinion to be honest. :) My web site problems are not just from a lack of coding capability, but more a lack of aesthetic vision. Would anyone care to chip in here?

I'll have a look, and let you know what I find. :)

What do you wish to do with the multiple sub menus exactly? Do you want a mix of 2 and 3 level menus or just a 3 level menu? What should the 2nd level look like?

Have you considered using the 0.7.20b3 playlist feature for this purpose? :)

I'll give your idea some thought though.
