Announcements / Moderators wanted
« on: February 05, 2017, 11:50:04 AM »
It seems the number of visitors is slowly increasing on the forums. I would like some help moderating the forums towards the future. If you would like to help out, and think you have what it takes (a friendly demeanor and a lot of patience mostly), please drop me a PM, and let me know why you would be a good pick. :)

I'm planning to update the documentation next to make sure all information to use the new features is available. The PDF will disappear in the future; I've set up a new wiki to recreate and update the documentation. The PDF was a temporary measure to keep the information in case the old website was closed down. :)

Announcements / Spam
« on: January 23, 2017, 05:33:41 PM »
You've probably noticed that this forum's increased popularity has also brought in some spammers. I've currently taken the following two steps:
1. New accounts have to accepted by the administrator(s).
2. IP bans will be set up for IP ranges used by spammers.

In short: should you see any spam: just ignore it or report it. I'll get to it, and do what I can to permanently remove those people from this forum.

General Discussion & Help / Promotion video
« on: January 22, 2017, 01:37:52 PM »
I would really like a new promotion video for RetroFE, something to show on the RetroFE home page. Anyone handy with video creation willing to show off some RetroFE themes?

General Discussion & Help / Strange SDL/CPU behaviour
« on: January 21, 2017, 07:41:48 AM »
I figured I'd post the question here; perhaps any of you have an answer. I've noticed some strange behaviour with SDL vs my CPU. This behaviour is manifested in RetroFE as well as when I run MAME with a simple game like Pacman without throttling (so maximum speed). For some strange reason, the intel powersave kicks in, and the CPU is scaled down to 800 MHz. This doesn't happen when I run Pacman at 100% speed or when I run a demanding game like Radiant Silvergun. I've tried everything I could find online, but no luck so far. Considering the behaviour with Radiant Silvergun, I doubt it's a heat problem. The CPU has no trouble running at 2400-2500 MHz for long times during that game.

I think this downscaling is causing video decoding problems for me as well; my CPU can't keep up on rare occasions. When I reduce the FPS for RetroFE from a maximum of 60 to 30 or even 24, this problem disappears, and my CPU is happily running at 2000-2500 MHz. Any thoughts?

Off Topic / Introductions are in order: who are you?
« on: January 18, 2017, 02:07:11 PM »
I figured it was time one of these threads was started. :) Who are YOU?

I'll kick off:

My name is Pieter Hulshoff, born on the 7th of October, 1972, and living with wife and 2 children in the Netherlands. I hold a masters degree in computer science, and have been working as an ASIC/FPGA design engineer (till 2013) and (since then) as a network consultant & systems architect in the Telecom industry. My hobbies include Kuk Sool Won (martial arts), reading, D&D, and playing with my huge organ.

I started playing with Linux and MAME in the mid-late 90s, and after programming some minor features for xmame I figured I could write my own front-end (just in case you were wondering where that MAMEd theme came from). I lost interest for a while, and when I wanted to restart with my front-end in 2013, I found out there were already plenty of alternatives. Few of those however were F/OSS, so after a bit of investigation I started helping out with RetroFE rather than do everything on my own again, and now here we are. :)

« on: January 12, 2017, 02:56:15 PM »
I'm considering changing the intro video for Aeon Nox for release 0.7.20 to the video created by ryuuji. What is your opinion on this matter?

General Discussion & Help / MAME/MESS XML and include files
« on: December 28, 2016, 12:25:14 PM »
You can find the latest MAME/MESS XML and include files for RetroFE in the download section.
For RetroFE, simply install mame_full.xml as MAME.xml (or Arcade.xml, or whatever name you use for your MAME collection), and rename the include file of your choice to include.txt in that collection. Don't forget to delete meta.db so RetroFE will add the latest information to your meta database.

General Discussion & Help / Emulation specs
« on: December 27, 2016, 05:24:03 PM »
I was curious: what specs do you all use for your emulation rigs, and up to what era do you emulate?

I'm currently using a Zotac i68 (mini pc of 10x10x4 cm with core i5 and integrated graphics) for mine, and run up to PS1/GameCube. I'm considering something more powerful to allow PS2 emulation.

General Discussion & Help / Linux xsession focus issue
« on: December 23, 2016, 06:05:14 PM »
I recently switched to Mint, and tried to set up a RetroFE xsession today. The .desktop file was easily created, and RetroFE starts properly, but when I return from a game my RetroFE window refuses to take focus. This setup worked perfectly fine on my previous Kubuntu setup. Any ideas what might be causing this problem?

To be clear: this problem only exist if I run RetroFE without a window manager. Under KDE everything works without a hitch.

General Discussion & Help / Story files
« on: December 07, 2016, 10:42:33 AM »
Now that the new website is up and running, I'd like to start collecting game story files for distribution via the website. I know some people were already working on those. If you feel you have something worth sharing, please let me know, and I'll check them, and add them to the download section. :)

Announcements / RetroFE development
« on: December 07, 2016, 10:36:24 AM »
I have created an issue list on bitbucket: https://bitbucket.org/phulshof/retrofe/issues?status=new&status=open
You can find all the feature requests there, and I will update it as features get added and/or as feature requests come in. :)

General Discussion & Help / Art
« on: December 05, 2016, 10:53:47 AM »
RetroFE, like many front-ends, uses quite a bit of art to make the front-end look good. Both the HyperSpin and EmuMovies communities provide large amounts of artwork that's also usable in RetroFE. On the EmuMovies FTP site, you can even find a complete RetroFE setup including art for several systems (no roms of course), and an update including the required emulators for those systems. If you have an account there, feel free to take a look at the /Official/Retro FE Media Pack directory.

For MAME, I'm working together with the HyperSpin community to make a complete art set. You can find the WIP at https://mega.nz/#F!4VxAUb5Y!TlEEdgjiVHvEG1PSAPsqsg
You can find the bezels in emulators/MAME/artwork.

Since MEGA uses download limitations, for the best experience you should create your own (free) account, sync the data to your own account, and then use the MEGA sync tool to download the data to your computer.

Announcements / New website
« on: December 05, 2016, 10:34:24 AM »
Dear all,

Welcome to the new RetroFE website. For the time being we will operate under www.retrofe.nl; in time I expect that www.retrofe.com will also point to this site. I apologize for any quality issues of this site; I'm not a web developer, and I would welcome any and all help to improve the quality of this site. :) Let me know if you experience any issues with this new site, and I will try to resolve them as quickly as possible.

A few months ago, Emb, the original developer of RetroFE, asked me to take over control of RetroFE from him. Unfortunately I have been unable to move over the old forum, so we're starting with a clean slate here. If there's any information you want to copy over from the old site, do so now before it's gone. If you wish to use the new forum without the surrounding banners, just use http://www.retrofe.nl/SMF/

I hope that we can start an active community here, and work together with the art developers at HyperSpin and EmuMovies to keep a vibrant emulation scene up and running. We're not in competition with other front-ends; just working together to enjoy a common hobby. If you feel you can help out in any way, please let me know.

Now that the new site is up and running, I plan to get back to programming new features. Let's make RetroFE even better, together!
