I'm sorry, but no. As soon as you launch a game, RetroFE is fully on hold until the game returns control back over to RetroFE. If you want to play a video on the second monitor, you'll have to do it from outside RetroFE.

Help / Re: A way to show previous and next playlist?
« on: April 13, 2021, 05:00:15 PM »
This is one of the few features the frontend lacks for me and something I've requested in the past.

A menu for playlists is much better in terms of presentation and ease of use. Tapping the next/prev keys is pretty clumsy if you have more than a few playlists.

Well, I've started development for this feature. It's not as easy as it may sound, since menu structure support is quite distributed in the code, but I'll get there eventually. :)

That's why I added monitor rotation support in the latest executable. :)

Ok, the manual should be up to date again. This may help you make use of the new features. :)

Our main layout crashes randomly with this update, nothing alarming in the log either  :(

There's no such thing as a random crash. You know the drill: zip it up with an explanation of when and how it happens, and I'll see if I can reproduce it. :)

I wish I could program, then I might annoy you a lot less

There's no annoyance involved; just lack of time. :)

I have studies in development of management applications and in various programming languages such as c, c ++, javascript. . I also lack time because of my work (it has nothing to do with computing) but I would be willing to let you show me the insides of RetroFe and how the modifications are made to be able to add more things in the future. All the Layouts that I have created and that I continue to create in private are the result of my passion for the development of graphical interfaces, although I love programming.

The structure of the code is quite simple actually; have a look on github, and throw me a PM. We can set up a call sometime so I can walk you through it if needs be.

In all honesty: when I helped convince Emb to make RetroFE open source I really expected we would have had more programmers by now. My spare time is really limited, and we could have achieved so much more with a few extra programmers.

Also when pressing tab it seams like there is some invisible menu or a new functionality that does nt work well, can you help me with that?

It's a menu feature that I've been working on that isn't complete yet. The menu button should not have been configured in the controls.conf file in the release, so my apologies for the confusion.

The latest version is available on the download page; I hope to update the documentation soon.

I've uploaded RetroFE 0.10.20 to the download page; the source code can be found at This is an intermediate full release to provide you all with the latest core directory using the latest SDL and gstreamer libraries. I've been told it greatly reduces GPU usage, and should as such make things faster. I'm still in the process of rewriting the video handler, so it still contains the same memory leak it has contained since the beginning, but which becomes apparent if the theme displays a lot of videos at once. The (Windows) installation instructions have been updated accordingly.

For a full list of changes, see

I'll try to update the documentation in the upcoming weeks.

Edit: Yes, I've moved over to github. Bitbucket stopped supporting Mercurial, so I figured if I needed to move to git, I might as well move to github as well.

I'll probably create a full release again soon. I made a lot of changes lately that appear to be stable, but require a full release to prevent people from jumping through tons of hoops to get it to work.

Nice set for people to play with, and build their setup upon.

As for your other two question: no, unfortunately RetroFE does not support that (yet).

Due to the way RetroFE handled elements on screen, reflections are on the same layer as the original. If you want it to be on a different layer, just use two instances, one without reflection on one layer, and one with reflection on the other. Should that provide an echo on the sound, just turn the volume to 0 for one of them.
