Title: Art
Post by: Pieter Hulshoff on December 05, 2016, 10:53:47 AM
RetroFE, like many front-ends, uses quite a bit of art to make the front-end look good. Both the HyperSpin and EmuMovies communities provide large amounts of artwork that's also usable in RetroFE. On the EmuMovies FTP site, you can even find a complete RetroFE setup including art for several systems (no roms of course), and an update including the required emulators for those systems. If you have an account there, feel free to take a look at the /Official/Retro FE Media Pack directory.

For MAME, I'm working together with the HyperSpin community to make a complete art set. You can find the WIP at https://mega.nz/#F!4VxAUb5Y!TlEEdgjiVHvEG1PSAPsqsg
You can find the bezels in emulators/MAME/artwork.

Since MEGA uses download limitations, for the best experience you should create your own (free) account, sync the data to your own account, and then use the MEGA sync tool to download the data to your computer.

I've uploaded a new modular RetroFE system to the EmuMovies FTP site, at /Official/Retro FE Media Pack
While it contains a README.txt as well, a bit of explanation:
- The RetroFE base.zip file contains the base RetroFE installation, with the latest executable. It's not very different from what you can find in the download section here, except that it does not have the Sega Genesis and Arcade collection.
- The MAME 0.x emulator.zip file contains the MAME emulator installation. All the collections currently in the set use MAME as their emulator, and the launchers all point to this installation.
- The rest of the zip files contain collections, as complete as I have them, with launchers for Linux and Windows. Just unzip them in the RetroFE directory.
- The emulators directory contains the MAME artwork (bezels) (/Official/Retro FE Media Pack/emulators/MAME/artwork), which can you simply drag and drop as a whole into your RetroFE directory. The MAME installation mentioned above will automatically use them.

Basically, all you need to do is take the base (or use your own), unzip the MAME installation if you want, unzip the collections you want, add them to your Main collection's menu.txt file, add your roms, and enjoy. :) The sets are mostly based on HyperSpin 1.0 XML files, so finding the corresponding roms should be easy. :)

What collections on linux do you have launchers setup for?

Thanks for your hard work!

What versiĆ³n of mame you use in linux? i'm in 16.10, but only use the libretrocore, and i have problems whit the CDI an others system.

For Commodore, amiga, CD32, CDTV etc, i use fs-uae, runs like a charm, because with retrofe, you can lauch a .fs-uae file like a rom <3 <3

I've updated the sets with the latest bezels by Krakerman and Griffin518.

I noticed Circo moved the RetroFE modular system to the Official section, so I've uploaded the MAME 0.184 sets to a new RetroFE directory in the Upload section.

Just to give my thoughts regarding this large folder that I am downloading all at once.

Is this actually worth it? If people have access to emu movies in the first place, they can use the automatic downloader which matches the xml to the files and downloads all the artwork.

Would it not be best just to include the best set up and basic graphics, skins etc for a working build?

I am on 17 gigs and still loads to download, I know that I prefer setting up one system at a time, to avoid as much human error as possible, games that I might strip in the future I am downloading the artwork etc for.

A basic set up would be a lot better, I still have 28 gigs to download so all in all about 40 gigs if people are on limited broadband connections, this method will be far too much for them.

Just my view anyway

Regards

Mark

It's a choice and a convenience, nothing more. 😀 To some it may be useless, and to others a huge asset. As such, I'm offering people a choice, nothing more.

That's cool, thank you for putting it all together for us, I am downloading the lot anyway, and spending the weekend, trying to get some emulators up and running, and getting the arcade running at a certain level, it makes a nice change from messing with the jukebox and tagging music files.

Yeah, which was what I was more after and what I really meant. However, the rest will make it easier for me, just I am now sat here like an idiot looking at the progress bar. falling asleep lol

I am usually sat here like an idiot anyway, but feels like being hypnotised 84%,85%

Still as long as I don't start clucking like a chicken, I shall be happy

Only me again.

In relation to these updates, I just looked at the retrofe directory on emu movies. I cannot find a directory called bezels, or even updates.

All the zip files are there, however, you are not saying what the bezels are, or how to download them.

E.G are they bezels for MAME, SNES, NES, Genesis etc etc

It is like me saying, I have a date tonight with Sandra Bullock, and someone replying oh yeah were too?

My reply is I dunno, she never told me where just a time.

For a newbie, saying bezels updated means nothing, you might know what you mean, a few others might know, but I am lost lol

Regards

Mark

My apologies; I forgot to update the 2nd post. I recently got write permissions for the Official section at EmuMovies, so I moved the entire set.
Bezels are in /Official/Retro FE Media Pack/emulators/MAME/artwork; you can copy the entire emulators directory if you want to use it with the MAME installation files that are available as zip file in the /Official/Retro FE Media Pack directory.
These are bezels to be used with MAME; not to be confused with RocketLauncher bezels. The set also includes bezels for several consoles like NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.

Hi Mark,

Once you have the zip files downloaded, simply paste them into emulators/mame/artwork/
Don't need to unzip them or edit anything in the mame.ini file.
You may noticed there is alway a default.lay in the zip file referencing the .png files, the zip file has the same name as the relevant rom.

here are some information about the bezel :

The link in the OP has been updated to the new set. It's now set up as a complete RetroFE setup for MAME purposes, including pre-configured emulator. Just add your games, either in the collections/Arcade/roms or in the emulators/MAME/roms directory, and you're set to go. If you just wish to see the games you actually have, just remove or rename the include.txt file in the collections/Arcade directory.

Hello!  I recently switched to RetroFE, and I absolutely love it.  I am now focused on making it my primary and sole front-end.  The art packs on EmuMovies have been invaluable, but I was hoping you were planning on adding more?  I have some requests, and some questions.  The art packs that I would most like to see added are: Atari Jaguar, Atari Lynx, Bandai WonderSwan, Bandai WonderSwan Color, Magnavox Odessey2, Mattel Intellivision, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Famicom Disk System, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, SNK Neo Geo Pocket, and SNK Neo Geo Pocket Color.  If you have those readily available and can add them to the FTP, that would be awesome.  If not, could you post a complete set of instructions for what it takes to make those kinds of collection packs?  The documentation in the wiki only really scratches the surface, and I can tell you put a lot more work into them than what the wiki explains.

What is the best way to generate include.txt files for large roms sets like a No-Intro set?  I noticed that the Atari 2600 collection on the FTP does not include an include.txt file.  Was that intentional?  If it wasn't, could you please add one?  If it was, could you please explain how best to go about generating one?

Thanks very much for your help, and all of your hard work.

I actually have several of those, but they are either:
- incomplete
- not using MAME as an emulator (I've tried to provide the sets complete with emulator setup)
I may add them in the future, but I've been a tad busy lately. :)

Most of these sets are based on the HyperSpin XML files. Basically what I've done in the past is
- Grab the HyperSpin XML from the HyperSpin website
- Grab the HyperSpin art (wheels, boxes, carts, etc.) from the HyperSpin website
- Grab the EmuMovies art (videos, screenshots, etc.) from the EmuMovies FTP site
- Grab the corresponding games
- Grab a device image from https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Evan-Amos
- Add the story files, if available
Set complete. It can be quite a bit of work though, as you can imagine. I do know however that the truRIP group is working on gathering complete sets for distribution, so that might be worth the wait as well.

RetroFE doesn't need include.txt files; by default it generates the list from the rom files if the extension has been properly set in the collection's settings.conf. I just added them to (most of; apparently I forgot some) the EmuMovies sets so people can see what it looks like even without having the roms. You could simply remove the include.txt files from those sets, and it would just show the available roms in stead.

Cool, thanks very much for the info.  I tried taking a stab at setting one up from scratch, but that lead to more questions.
  • Is there any reason why you suggest getting some files from the HyperSpin website and some from EMFTP, as opposed to just getting everything from EMFTP?
  • The device images from Evan-Amos's page are great, but they're jpgs, and RetroFE only seems to support png?  Do you convert them with GiMP or something? Or is there another source with pngs?
  • The story files are the only ones I'm not very familiar with, is there a good source for those?
  • What about the info.conf file, do you just generate those by hand?
  • When you say the truRIP group is working on gathering "complete sets," what do you mean by that?  Complete collection folders for RetroFE?  Or something else?

Thanks again very much for your help.

1. EM doesn't have the wheels, and some of the boxart is not up to the quality they have at HS.
2. RetroFE supports jpg as well, but EA's page also contains the pngs. Make sure you select the images with transparency.
3. Not really; I pulled them from all sorts of places, and converted them to text files. That's also why I'm missing so many stories of the sets you asked for.
4. Yes, with a little help from Wikipedia.
5. Yes, complete collection folders for RetroFE. They've uploaded some work to PD already, but for the most part it's still work in progress.
