Title: New website
Post by: Pieter Hulshoff on December 05, 2016, 10:34:24 AM
Dear all,

Welcome to the new RetroFE website. For the time being we will operate under www.retrofe.nl; in time I expect that www.retrofe.com will also point to this site. I apologize for any quality issues of this site; I'm not a web developer, and I would welcome any and all help to improve the quality of this site. :) Let me know if you experience any issues with this new site, and I will try to resolve them as quickly as possible.

A few months ago, Emb, the original developer of RetroFE, asked me to take over control of RetroFE from him. Unfortunately I have been unable to move over the old forum, so we're starting with a clean slate here. If there's any information you want to copy over from the old site, do so now before it's gone. If you wish to use the new forum without the surrounding banners, just use http://www.retrofe.nl/SMF/

I hope that we can start an active community here, and work together with the art developers at HyperSpin and EmuMovies to keep a vibrant emulation scene up and running. We're not in competition with other front-ends; just working together to enjoy a common hobby. If you feel you can help out in any way, please let me know.

Now that the new site is up and running, I plan to get back to programming new features. Let's make RetroFE even better, together!

I just fixed the attachment settings; the size of the directory has been changed from 10 MB to 10 GB, like it was supposed to be. :)

Interesting concept. :) Certainly worth considering IMHO, but I'd like to get some more input from others as well.

Welcome, and feel free to jump in on the discussion regarding the way the website looks. :)

The only thing I would change is the whitespace on the main page, there is too much in my opinion.
I personally use the /SMF version for the forums but it doesn't work for the main page unfortunately.

Greetings I'm back. :)

Figure I'd check in to see what's new. On the original forums under the developer chat section I patched RetroFE to run on Mac OS. Unfortunately I didn't get to share my changes to the source back in January. I'd like to dive back in. Just wondering what direction the project has taken since then? The last I heard a new layout system was in the works which was later scrapped.

That's correct. Emb was working on a new layout system, but had to abandon it due to lack of time. I took over development in February, but I stayed on the XML path. I did manage to fix a lot of bugs, and add new features in spite of that though. :)
I'd welcome your changes; just let me know what to change. I'll clean up my bitbucket fork soon to reduce the size of the package, and work from a single branch from there on, so once that's done you could give me a pull request for your changes.

Should I fork your default branch? I see you cleaned things up 2hrs ago.

Sure, go ahead. I'm sure there'll be more changes in the near future, but now's as good a time as any. 😀

I made some good headway on the MacOS build!

RetroFE can be installed with Homebrew, keeping it simple!
RetroFE can be started from the command line 'retrofe' or as a clickable RetroFE.app!

Now a couple of things.
1) Do we have an official Icon I can use?
2) When starting RetroFE as an App Mac OS doesn't honor user defined environment variables that were set from the console. The GUI location of setting this up varies on which version of Mac OS X you are running. One way I can work around this is to allow the creation of a user made ~/.retrofe flat file. Inside that is a one liner '/your/new/retrofe-home'. At the moment this is a Mac only feature. If you think this would be useful for Linux too let me know. If so we should decide that when ~/.retrofe is detected does it supersede if $RETROFE_PATH was also set?

That's great news! :)

I believe there's an icon in the current distribution release, but if it's not I'll grab it from my own set, and send it to you.

How does that RETROFE_PATH work exactly? I haven't needed to set any path variables under Linux; it just uses the path it's executed in as base, which allows for a portable RetroFE installation. Could you elaborate a bit?

I don't fully understand the real impact of having it myself. Why not name it RETROFE_HOME for one? One advantage of the option though is that if you install an updated version of RetroFE in a fixed location it wipes out what's there. When you fire up RetroFE regardless of where you place it, it will load the configuration that was hard set outside of the executables path via ENV variable. I don't know if that's important to users. Or if it helps those who wish to hot switch to a varied preset launcher configuration. I can only speculate.

Minor question about the forum: I need to press F5 every time I enter them, or I canĀ“t access any of the forums. Does it happens to anybode else?  :o IE11 on W7.

I heard more complaints from others as well. What happens if you don't use F-5?

Hi,

I have the same issue, i always have to refresh the page to be able to browse the forum.
If not i have a oops error message...

From what I understand it has something to do with the PHP session ID being part of the URL, though how and why is still unclear to me. If anyone has any suggestions: I'm all ears. I'll try to contact hosting support later this week to see if they have any answers.

Edit: I've just disabled almost all WordPress plugins to see if that helps any. Let me know if you still have issues, preferably with details that I can show to the helpdesk.

Edit: Do you by chance have cookies disabled?

Has this issue disappeared since I removed all the WordPress plugins or does it still exist?

Also: Any web developers willing to give me a hand on improving this website? :) Web design really isn't my strong suit. Neither is programming, but I manage to bluff my way through that. ;)

The solution is very simple:
After Registration it works flawlessly; only if you are watching as guest there is the 403 error... maybe access restrictions?

Probably, but access to guest should be available according to the settings...

I have no opinion to be honest. :) My web site problems are not just from a lack of coding capability, but more a lack of aesthetic vision. Would anyone care to chip in here?

I think it's an improvement over what I have for sure, though I miss the download menu button, and I would like a slide-show/video on the front page as well. You're making this with WordPress I hope?

We should also make a promotion video again sometime; one that really shows off RetroFE, and that we can show on the front-page. Is anyone up for making one? TimmyB made one in the past, but I haven't spoken to him in a while.

You're also making it usable for mobile then? I'm not married to WordPress, but in the end I should be able to maintain it without your help as well. 😀

It will be responsive , so yes mobile/tablet and so on :)
Will be easy to maintain ... notepad is enough :P plus I will try to make all the necessary posts/pages so you can easily figure out what to change when you need to.

Yeah, cookies disabled. One F5 press each first time and then no problems, as guest or after login.

I would love for someone to set up a new web site, and perhaps take over the management of the web site as well. I accept that I'm not good at it, nor can I find the time to learn to become good at it. What we have at the moment works, but it's not very appealing, and I'm sure we could do better. Any volunteers? :)
