Title: RetroFE 0.8.0 - Release Candidate 1
Post by: Pieter Hulshoff on April 02, 2017, 09:23:54 AM
Due to the recent issues I've made RetroFE 0.8.0 - Release Candidate 1 available from the Download page. Please have a look, test it, and let me know if there are any issues. :) It doesn't contain any major feature improvements over 0.7.20; mainly some bug fixes and improvements. Once 0.8.0 is properly tested I'll release it, and from there 0.x.0 will be the full releases, with 0.x.y being incremental improvements and feature enhancements.

Next steps:
- Properly test the release candidates for 0.8.0.
- Release 0.8.0.
- Add wiki documentation rather than the current PDF file.
- Provide story files and other system files via separate downloads. I considered adding it all to the full release, but there'd be a lot of material there that many people may have no need for, so I decided against it.
- Update the website; ryuuji has been working on an intro video and new website code that I could use.
- Add all feature requests as bug reports to bit bucket to better keep track of them.
- Work on new features for 0.8.x.

Is there a link to the bit bucket bugs so one can see if their issue or feature they want is listed?  Thanks for your work!

Question: I've currently included all the layouts in the full release: should I or should I keep it smaller, and let people simply download other layouts from the website?

Sweet thanks I dont see search feature on list with some type of on screen keyboard, would be nice.  I really like how hypersearch worked on my old hyperspin setup.  I sure you will come up with an awesome solution though...  ;)

1.basic release of RetroFE  (default layout included)
2.full release of RetroFE (all layouts included)
3.option for people to download layouts (like it is now)

Yeah I would just put it all on your own google drive and link to that for all downloads to save on website badwidth.  Its not like you have a huge amount of data.  Let google use their bandwidth and you save $$$ while keeping all the stuff if someone stops sharing

That link was to the old RFE repo, not the current one. I believe Pieter thought you were asking about the format of the issue tracker so he used that as an example. He hasn't added his to-do list to the current RFE repo yet, which I believe is what you were asking.

Any problems with 0.8.0-RC1 yet? I'm doing some clean-up still, but would like to release 0.8.0 officially within a few weeks from now. New features are halted; just bug fixes (if possible) at the moment.

Tested out .8.0 RC1 and found it works great for me.  I do have a question on controls config:

1. I have one of my key set to "=" for back.  If i put in =,joy2button8 for it then equals doesnt work any more.
2. I noticed in windows control panel button 7 and 8 are for start/back for xbox 360 controller.  If i set button8/start to start it goes back.
3. This may have to do with using the = sign.  If i use Keypad = or the As400 one it doesnt work period.

Any ideas?  If you need more info let me know  Here is my controls.conf

Code: [Select]
up = Up,joy2Hat0Up
down = Down,joy2Hat0Down
left =
right =
pageUp = Left,joy2Hat0Left
pageDown = Right,joy2Hat0Right
letterUp = h,joy2button3
letterDown = z,joy2button1
nextPlaylist = 6,joy2button4
addPlaylist =  2,joy2button5
removePlaylist = 5,joy2button6
random = 6,joy2button2
select = =
back = 0,joy2button7
quit = Q

Unfortunately that's the latest version; I plan to replace it with an updated wiki as soon as 0.8.0 is released.
Is there something specific you're missing?

Hey,

Yes indeed, i would like to have more information in regards :

- "The last step is to add the newly created collection to the main menu by editing RetroFE/collections/Main/menu.xml, and add a line:" I think this one is gone and we use only menu.txt instead
- 3D options for enabling the GPU (for retro FE)
- option in settings : # Clear the input on entering/exiting a collection collectionInputClear - what does that do exactly ?
- the retroFE shortcut in the root directory can no tbe moved otherwise it s not working, maybe a quick explanation would be necessary.
- in the controls config, i have never managed to use the hat thing, only this way :

Quote
up = joy2Axis1+,Up
down = joy2Axis1-,Down
left = joy2Axis0-,Left
right = joy2Axis0+,Right
pageUp = joy3Axis1+,A
pageDown = joy3Axis1-,B
letterUp = joy3Axis0+,N
letterDown = joy3Axis0-,M
nextPlaylist = joy3Button3,P
addPlaylist = joy2Button7,I
removePlaylist = joy3Button7,O
random = joy3Button6,R
select = joy3Button8,Space
back = joy3Button9,Escape
quit = Q

- when the favorite list is selected, is there an information on the screen telling you it is active or not ? That would be handy.
- if you want to add layouts and that you have selected the AEON NOX. spare layouts must be placed in Aeon Nox sub folders ?

Extra question :
- There was a direct link to the manual on the previous website, why don't you have one as well on the .nl version ?

Sorry if i am asking stupid question but this can maybe help others at my level :)

Correct, older versions used an xml.

Quote
the retroFE shortcut in the root directory can no tbe moved otherwise it s not working, maybe a quick explanation would be necessary.
The shortcut uses relative paths so if you move the shortcut the exe will not be found. You can create a new one in Windows by right clicking the exe and that will use absolute paths so you can move it wherever you'd like.

Quote

That depends on the layout, if the layout utilizes the playlist type for an element it will show. The Nox layout for example will display an image for the playlist using the logos in the collections/_common\medium_artwork\playlist directory.

Quote

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking here but if you want to use a different layout you'll need to download the layout and place it in the RetroFE/layouts folder. You would then edit the "layout" value in the RetroFE/settings.conf to the name of the layout folder.

As said: menu.xml is still supported, but it's not much used anymore.

Quote
- 3D options for enabling the GPU (for retro FE)

RetroFE should use hardware acceleration automatically when available. The emulators have their own settings though.

Quote
- option in settings : # Clear the input on entering/exiting a collection collectionInputClear - what does that do exactly ?

Some controllers may give multiple inputs when pressed, causing you to run the game immediately after you enter a collection. To prevent that from happening, you can set this parameter to true; it will clear the input queue when you enter/exit a collection.

What type of controller do you use?

There is, but it's in PDF for now. That's just temporarily while I set up a wiki on this site as well.

Can you upload your controls.conf as a file rather than text? I'd like to play around with it a bit. I just did a test with my own keyboard, and it appears to be working just fine, but it may be related to the combination with control pad buttons.

Have you not thought about doing a torrent file? You could have the download link just on the website, so it hopefully does not go into the torrent scene, and then people can keep it shared. It would be one way of cutting down on your bandwidth.

I hate to say this, but I am locking out BIG STYLE, I have been trying most of the morning, well past couple of hours, it is very slow on the splash screen, I am trying to add collections, but often when I run the program I have had to hard reset my computer about three times now as it locks up, even alt ctrl and delete does not work.

I never had such problems in the earlier build.

My PC is pretty decent spec

i5-3670k @ 3.5 ghz
4 gig of ram at the moment
64 bit os
a 780 ti graphics card

Ok, this is very odd; you're the first to report such problems. Which versions did you use in the past?
Please upload your log.txt file as well; I'd like to take a look.
How large is your meta.db file? Have you tried removing it, and then start RetroFE, and let it rest for a while? Creating the meta.db can take a bit of time depending on how many meta XML files you've provided.

Other than the error in the Future Pinball.xml I see nothing out of the ordinary. There's a lot of XML files to convert to meta.db, which takes quite a bit of time, but other than that nothing serious I can find.
When you start it again after the new meta.db creation, what does it do that it shouldn't be doing? Can you upload that log.txt file as well?

It seems to be fine now for some reason, before it was just locking up and needed to hard reset.

The main problem now is the collections pack for the super nintendo system, that just shows xml and then the file details in the header, so looks as if something has not been closed off somewhere.

Hiya,

I think we have our wires crossed here, this is the wrong file, I think what you would call it is the story file?

As in Nintendo Game Boy is an 8 bit handheld console blah blah blah

That is the part that is not loading, it is coming up with xml version for the snes.

It looks as if it is a total dud to be honest, I am just trying to download it again, just to see if it was a bad download my end.

The picture files do not show previews like they usually do, and also the video does not show as it should, as if they were either cut off during download or files corrupted.

Yep just this one, I have tried all the others, they show the artwork, the story etc.

I have redownloaded again and collections Super Nintendo Entertainment System - System Artwork non of these are loading, not even in a paint package. The story is pretty much an xml file

The medium artwork seems fine,

All of the files seem to be just the same files include, info, settings etc just seem to be like xml files.

Very odd; I just downloaded the zip file from the EmuMovies FTP, unzipped it, and tested the files, and they work fine for me. The story.txt is the story that I expect, and the video plays normally as well.

Very weird as I have downloaded it twice now and both time same result. I am on my office PC for now, otherwise, I could have done a video for you or included the files.

I don't even have ftp installed on this so I cannot download. I shall boot up tomorrow and do a video to show what is happening my end.

I thought at first it might have been because I was downloading the whole lot, it did stop on MAME when I was downloading that, so had to pause that, but that works. It is just the SNES that doesn't.

The SNES set is a rather large one. Perhaps a problem with your FTPA client or unzipper?

I have tried twice, once while I was downloading the lot, and then once today with just the snes stuff. I can set up core ftp tomorrow on this PC and try downloading it onto here, and then seeing if that makes a difference.

MAME is a lot bigger though, and that had no problems, so I cannot see how it should be I think MAME is about 18 gigs, and SNES is 5? Just off the top of my head.

Infact hang on, shall try now.

I just installed core ftp on my office PC, the SSD is new, but the storage isn't, it was working for me earlier on the arcade PC, I could download the emulators folder, but I couldn't seem to download anything else, so I tried filezilla but again no joy on that, so not sure if it is a problem with emu movies or my end, as not paid the bill yet and usually goes a bit funny not paying the bills.

I am not sure if Agent47 has any luck yet, as he has not reported back yet.

Regards

Mark

I downloaded the SNES pack and dropped it in a freshly downloaded .8 release, no issues at all here. Everything extracted fine and all of the proper media is displayed. So I'd say that rules out the pack being the issue and indicates it's something specific to your machine Mark, whatever that may be.

I just done a quick video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU5gO75KlYs this is what is happening my end.

I have downloaded it at least twice now to different hard drives using core ftp.

The download takes around 50 minutes and compressed file size is 4.7 gb

Mine's 4.8 GB; I wonder where things went wrong... I could see if I can provide you with a MEGA download option.

Thank you for the offer, but I think it is just one folder that is affected which is the system_artwork folder, I can find files for that, and Ryuuji has posted the story for me, so I can sort that folder out and it should work.

It is just weird how that was the only one I have had problems with and all the rest were fine, but you have downloaded and all good your end.

Thanks for all the help anyway, I am still pretty much nowhere but I shall probably take the rest of this week, trying to get the systems online.

Regards

Mark

I honestly have no idea what might cause this. Let me know if you can't gather the files; I can easily provide you with a zip containing the system artwork.

Speaking of packs, if I get spare time I can help with the collections that you do not have. I have three PC's that I want to add stuff to, home cinema, 4:3 arcade and vertical but I know with the vertical I shall be using another software as I do not think you have any vertical skins so far.

I used to have one for my 10:16 monitor setup, but I haven't looked at that for a while.

My RC1 is often crashing while initialising. Is there any way to debug RetroFE to find out whats going wrong?

There is if you know how to compile RetroFE with debug information, and know how to handle a debugger like gdb. :)
Have you considered switching to 0.8.5?
